About College
The Government Unani Medical College was founded in Chennai City in 1979. The first group of students was accepted in 1979 into the two-year Pre-Tib (pre-degree course) and the five-and-a-half-year Main course of B.U.M.S. 1982 saw the start of classes for the first batch of the B.U.M.S. Main Course on the premises of the Arignar Anna Govt. Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai-106. The University of Madras was associated with this college. The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and the Government Unani Medical College, Chennai, partnered in 1988 to offer the U.G. Course (B.U.M.S.) in the Unani system of medicine to the state of Tamil Nadu.
There have been 26 students enrolled annually since the College’s founding. The number of BUMS seats was increased from 26 to 60 in 2016. Selection of professional courses is based on guidelines set forth by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), New Delhi, an autonomous body that oversees educational standards under the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
There are three academic block buildings and one major building in the Government Unani Medical College. These four buildings house each of the fourteen departments. On the campus of Arignar Anna Govt. Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai, college departments also have separate departmental libraries, a pharmacy, a herbal garden, and an out-patient/in-patient radiology department with X-ray, ultrasound, ECG, biochemical, and pathological laboratory facilities.
The Government Unani Medical College, which houses a distinct department dedicated to the Unani system of medicine with 100 beds for male, female, and pediatric patients, is connected to the Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine. The hospital is equipped with a clinical laboratory, an ECG, a USG, and an X-ray equipment.
The Govt Arignar Anna Hospital Campus is home to the herbal garden. It contains 153 species and over 153 unani medicinal plants for educational purposes, covering methods for live plant identification, cultivation, conservation, collection, and preservation.
The Arignar Anna Govt Hospital of Indian Medicine in Chennai, which is safe and quiet, is home to a separate hostel for female students run by the Government Unani Medical College. It contains a separate kitchen and entertainment area, and it can house up to 72 prisoners. In addition to overseeing the students, the Deputy Warden is responsible for attending to their daily requirements.
The library has 3694 books on Unani medicine, 2172 books on modern medicine and allied subjects, 21 medical publications, and 7577 books on Ayurveda and Siddha systems. There are 13464 books accessible in total. The library can accommodate up to 100 people for seating and has computers with internet access.
